Description

The ABe 4/16 are four-part electric multiple units, of which the Rhaetian Railway has ordered a total of 56 units from Stadler Rail. The roll-out of the first train took place on April 15, 2019 at the Stadler Altenrhein plant. The first train was delivered to Landquart on June 27, 2019 and subsequently subjected to various tests. The RhB names the trains “Capricorn” after the Graubünden heraldic animal, the ibex, which can also be recognized by the illuminated Graubünden coat of arms on the front sides. The trains, which are just over 76 meters long and weigh 130 tons, contribute to an acceleration and densification of passenger traffic on the RhB with their output of 1,400 KW and their top speed of 120 km/h, not least due to the possibility of coupling up to four multiple units. The trains are also equipped with an automatic central buffer coupling, as – unlike the Allegra – they are only used for passenger transport and are not used to carry freight wagons.The order for these 56 trains, valued at 534 million Swiss francs, represents the largest rolling stock order in the history of the Rhaetian Railway.In keeping with tradition, the trains are given names after mountains, so the first train with the number 3111 was christened “Piz Ela” in Filisur on October 9, 2020. Since 2021, more and more of these trains have been running on the RhB network – especially in Prättigau on the line from Landquart to Filisur.
