Description

Husky VMMD (Vehicle Mounted Mine Detector) is a contemporary South African anti-mine vehicle. The first prototypes were probably created in the early 1970s. The drive is provided by a single motor Mercedes Benz OM 906LA about 201 hp. Husky VMMD does not have a fixed armament as standard.

The Husky vehicle was commissioned by the South African Ministry of Defense at the DCD-Dorbyl Rolling Stock Division. It was created as a cover and vehicle for the avant-garde of land convoys that supplied South African troops serving in Angola and Namibia during the so-called South African Border War (1966-1990). The main task of the Husky car was to clear the communication routes of land mines and the so-called fugas. Cars of this type always operated in pairs, with the first car acting as a mine detector, and the second neutralizing them. Vehicles of this type are currently used in the armies of many countries, including South Africa, Spain and the USA. The US Army purchased them in 2010.
